BE WATER MY FRIEND
or how to get from mud to outer space
a project by Christina Gruber

11 July - 16 September 2018
open daily from 16:00 to 20:00

With “Be Water My Friend“, the Danube will find its way into the kulturtankstelle from July to September 2018. The artist and water ecologist Christina Gruber invites associates and visitors to her Danube Lab. Together they shall get to the bottom of the river.

The interdisciplinary art and research project “From Mud To Outer Space“ is the reason why Christina Gruber has been traveling to various rivers since 2017 to explore the interrelation between human being and body of water. Starting out in the swamps of the Mississippi River, her path initially led her back to her own origins in Amstetten, to the so-called Amstettner Schwelle (Amstetten Ridge), to make her way from there to Sulina at the Black Sea.

The temporary Danube Lab at the kulturtankstelle provides room to develop new narratives in co-operation with the people of Linz, ecologists, scientists, historians, fishermen and -women, artists, and visitors.
The processual and site-specific working method thus links the kulturtankstelle's story with that of the river. Both are spaces of transition which are used for transport on the one hand and are based on human interaction on the other.
Because just as rivers rewrite their story each day, so do we. Alluvial deposit and erosion processes bring out ever new layers and make others disappear. Precise assumptions often remain valid for only a short period of time, thus allowing for no stagnation.

Just as an ecosystem does, so the organism named Danube Lab will constantly change during the two-month exhibition period, and will enter into fresh symbioses with the place and the participants.

*The title “Be Water My Friend“ refers to the quote by martial artist, martial arts coach and actor Bruce Lee. “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.“
