Biennale Cuvée 08
WORLD SELECTION OF CENTEMPORARY ART

press information from: 28.02.2008

date: 29.02.2008 - 27.04.2008

Today biennials are the most important settings and indicators of contemporary art. Their significance is reflected in the continuously growing numbers of visitors and the media hype that meanwhile accompanies them.

They are simultaneously a stage for “big names” and a sought-after platform for young, ambitious artists, who are thus able to present themselves in an international spotlight. With Biennale Cuvée the OK has created an exhibition form that does justice to this international trend. Now for the second time, the OK presents a selection of the most interesting and best works from the most important art biennials around the world: Venice, Sydney, Moscow, São Paulo, Taipei, Shanghai, Seoul, Sharjah, Gwangju and Mechelen. It offers visitors a glimpse into the international art world and an opportunity for a condensed experience of contemporary art.

NARDA ALVARADO, Bolivien

Olive Green, 2003

Videoperformance, Video
27. São Paulo Biennal, 2006

The absurd video performances by Narda Alvarado irritate conventional arrangements of order. A row of trainee policemen blocks an important street in La Paz for a moment to eat exactly one olive following a strict choreography. The brief anarchistic act is not so much a politically motivated commentary as it is a parable about the chaotic and amusing everyday life in the city.

Born 1975 in La Paz/Bolivia, lives and works there.

52. Int. Art Exhibition-La Biennale di Venezia, 2007

E CHEN, Taiwan/Kanada

One Thousand Year Bloom, 2005/2008

Room installation
5. Taipei Biennal, 2006/2007

E Chen transforms the hall of the OK into a cactus landscape, interspersed with American global everyday objects. Each object is woven from a single thread of yarn; parts will be mechanically unravelled during the course of the exhibition.

Born 1966 in Kaohsiung/Taiwan, lives and works in Los Angeles.

LEÓN FERRARI Argentinien

Objects, reliefs and pictures
27. São Paulo Biennal, 2006

NINA FISCHER / MAROAN EL SANI, DE

Toute la mémoire du monde - Alles Wissen dieser Welt, 2006

2-Channel -Videoinstallation,
10. Istanbul Biennal, 2007

The old Bibiothèque Nationale de France in Paris is largely empty. Fifty years ago Alain Resnais shot his film Toute la mémoire du monde there. In analogy to his camera pans, thousands of shelves pass by in the double projection, but without books. The images of the empty reading room and the empty shelves imply the loss of access to knowledge.

Nina Fischer, born 1965 in Emdem, Maroan el Sani, born 1966 in Duisburg, live and work in Berlin.

MESCHAC GABA, Benin/NL

Sweetnes, 2006

Room installation
27. São Paulo Biennal, 2006

Sweetness was created against the background of slave labor on the sugar cane plantations in Meschac Gaba’s home country of Benin. The roughly 50 m² large model of a global city made of sugar is expanded for each presentation with a site-specific building; Lentos has been added for “Biennale Cuvée”.

Lagos Wide & Close, 2005

2-Channel-Videoinstallation / interactive DVD
27. Sao Paulo Biennal, 2006

Bregtje van der Haak develops her works in the border region between art and journalism. Her interactive documentary Lagos Wide & Close investigates the explosively growing city of Lagos in Nigeria. She shows how that city that is proliferating uncontrolled can be an example of innovative urban development for the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas because of its network of self-organization.

Born 1966 in Utrecht/NL, lives and works in Amsterdam.

CARSTEN HÖLLER, BE

Flicker Film, 2005

3-Channel-Videoinstallation
3. Contour Biennal Mechelen, 2007

Carsten Höller’s work consists of a series of experiments dealing with perception and its manipulation. Three simultaneous, but slightly offset shots of Congolese bands are projected overlapping, so that only one projection is visible at a time and – enhanced by the hot Wenge rhythms – a “flicker effect” occurs.

Born 1961 in Brussels, lives and works in Stockholm/Sweden.

KUI HUANG, China

scale, 2007

Room installation
6. Shanghai Biennal, 2006

A scale is placed in the entrance area of the OK, which visitors cross. The weight is registered and transferred to a large LED screen, which displays the current total weight of all exhibition visitors so far.

Born 1977 in Renshou/China, lives and works in Shanghai.

Born 1976 in Sarajevo/Bosnia-Herzegovina, lives and works there.
www.sejlakameric.com

LEOPOLD KESSLER, DE/A

Red Sea Star, 2007

Video projection
8. Sharjah Biennal, 2007

In his ironic interventions Leopold Kessler plays with public space as the interface between the private and the public sphere. The video Red Sea Star consists of a single camera pan through an underwater world at night; corals, exotic fish – then a light appears, a construction emerges from the darkness. The camera moves toward a window: the last frontier post of human civilization is a restaurant.

Born 1976 in Munich, lives and works in Vienna.

SHIH-CHIEH HUANG, Taiwan/USA

C-X-08, 2008

Room installation
52. Int. Art Exhibition-La Biennale di Venezia, 2007, Taiwan-Pavillion

Electronic mass commodities serve as the starting material for a colorful, playful world of technology. Plastic bags, cables or tape are combined with liquids and light elements into a synaesthetic interactive installation. The artist creates graceful kinetic creatures that enter into a dialogue with the visitors.

Born 1975 in Taipei/Taiwan, lives and works in New York/USA.

WEI LIU, China

Small Caps Camera, 2006

Object, 2 Videos
4. Seoul Biennal, 2006

Wei Liu provides a highly contemporary and idiosyncratic contribution to the theme of the diary. A small video camera attached to the head records a person’s changing expressions for 24 hours. The extreme close-up immediately captures every emotion.

Born 1972 in Beijing/China, lives and works there.

DELAINE LE BAS, GB

Neighbours Making Evil, 2007

Room installation

We Have A History, 2005
52. Int. Art Exhibition-La Biennale di Venezia, 2007, Roma-Pavillion

The works from found materials that at first seem naive and folkloric are multi-layered assemblages that can be read biographically. However, the artist’s Roma origins are only a partial aspect of her investigation of the heterogeneous roles that make up identity today. In We Have A History she translates the history of her family into a series of textile works.

Born 1965 in Worthing/GB, lives and works there.

SERVET KOÇYIGIT, Turkey

Long Donkey, 2003

Video
27. São Paulo Biennal, 2006

Servet Koçyigit reorganizes objects, people and situations to create alternative life realities in small humorous scenes. Long Donkey shows a children’s game that is familiar in Turkey. While one group forms a donkey, the other jumps on its back until the players fall over. Manipulated so that the weaker ones win, the game that can be understood across geographical and language barriers simultaneously becomes a human sculpture.

Born 1971 in Kaman/Turkey, lives and works in Amsterdam and Istanbul.

RONALD MORÁN, El Salvador

Habitación infantil (Kinderzimmer), 2005

Room installation
52. Int. Art Exhibition-La Biennale di Venezia, 2007, Lateinamerika-Pavillion

Ronald Morán covers the wall, floor and all the furnishings of children‘s rooms with a soft white cotton fleece. In this way, he creates a place that is just as real as it is dream-like, where parents can raise their children without physical danger. At the same time, he raises the question of the conditions for the presence or absence of violence. For the OK, Ronald Morán has taken a typical Austrian children‘s room and transformed it.

Born 1972 in El Salvador, lives and works there.

GUSTAV METZGER, D/GB

Project Stockholm, June (Phase 1), 1972/2008

Room installation
8. Sharjah Biennial, 2007

The now 82-year-old Gustav Metzger, with his radical actions and concepts, is considered one of the most colorful figures in the art world of the 1960ies. For the Biennale in Sharjah he realized a project that was already planned for 1972 (!): 120 cars are placed in a square and the exhaust fumes are channeled into a large plastic tarpaulin. The second part of the work – where the cars explode because of over-heating in the plastic tarpaulin – was not realized “for safety reasons”.

Born 1926 in Nuremberg, lives and works in London.

MARKO MÄETAMM, Estonia

Family, 2007

Video animation DVD PAL, dv
52. Int. Art Exhibition-La Biennale di Venezia, 2007, Lateinamerika-Pavillion

The narrative structure of this animation film is simple and yet confusing. A cruel murder is carried out over and over again. Due to the repetition, the plot (man murders woman and two children) becomes seemingly meaningless. One becomes the observer of a constantly renewed act of violence that takes place in scenes that are always new and varied.

Born 1965 in Viljandi/Estonia, lives and works in Tallinn. www.maetamm.net

JACQUES NIMKI, Mauritius/GB

Florilegium Cuvée, 2008

Room installation
8. Sharjah Biennal, 2007

Botanical explorations of the local flora are the starting point for many of Jacques Nimki’s projects. He is interested in the grasses and plants that are called weeds or those that are hardly noticed because they are so inconspicuous. The artist collects them and uses them as models for his graphical studies in exhibition spaces.

Born 1959 in Port Louis/Mauritius, lives and works in London.

RAEDA SAADEH, Palestine

Vacuum, 2007

2-Channel-Videoinstallation
8. Sharjah-Biennal, 2007

In her performances, videos and installations Raeda Saade critically confronts the traditional Muslim image of woman. She usually represents this subject herself, whose scope of action is limited by political and private conditions. In the video Vacuum the artist is seen vacuuming dust in the desert.

Born 1977 in Um eil Fahem, lives and works in Nazareth and Jerusalem.

FERNANDO ORTEGA, Mexico

Hummingbird induced to a deep sleep, 2006

Video
27. São Paulo Biennal, 2006

Fernando Ortega directs his gaze to situations that normally do not concern us, thus focusing our perception with his careful arrangements: an unedited video shows a sleeping hummingbird on a branch.

Born 1971 in México City, lives and works there.

YONG-SEOK OH, Südkorea

Drama, 2006

2-Channell-Videoinstallation
4. Seoul Biennal, 2006

Yong-Seok Oh conjoins various image sequences into a whole. Like a contemporary translation of a medieval panel picture, a story can be read in the bundled image.

Born 1976 in Je-ju Now, lives and works in Seoul, Korea.

VASAN SITTHIKET, Thailand

Out of Chaos, 2004/2008

Installation and videodocumentation
6. Gwangju Biennal, 2006

A classical traditional art form is charged with topical political contents. The artist develops his figures in the style of a traditional Thai shadow-puppet play based on familiar politicians, “who are about to lead the world into the abyss”. His performances are spontaneously improvised and offer a commentary on current world events.

Born 1957 in Nakon-Sawan/Thailand, lives and works there.

SANGHEE SONG, South Korea/NL

Gesture to be a good daughter, 2001–2004

Objects and C-Prints

Ready to die, 2006

Installation, Video
27. São Paulo Biennale, 2006

Sanghee Song deals with the image of woman in the patriarchal culture of South Korea and has developed instructions for the attitude that a “good daughter” should take. She translates the internalized code of behavior into complex apparatuses, showing what is supportive and what is coercive about the system.

In the installation Ready to die, she ironically demonstrates the rituals of mourning and the rigidified pose in images of the dead.

Born 1970 in Seoul/Korea, lives and works in Seoul and Amsterdam/NL.

(BOHDAN STEHLIK / UNA SZEEMANN), DE/CH/USA

Faded Majesty, 2007

3-Channel-Videoinstallation
3. Contour Biennal Mechelen, 2007

supersober deal with myths, horror and fantasy and how they are realized in film. They playfully take up the aesthetic of Hollywood, experimenting with actors or sets. In Faded Majesty white, blue-eyed deer move through abandoned places and streets.

Bohdan Stehlik, born 1973 in Karlovy Vary/CZ, Una Szeemann, born 1975 in Locarno/CH, live and work in Switzerland and Italy.

KAZUNA TAGUCHI, JP

Unique, 2006

Series of 5 prints
5. Taipei-Biennale, 2006/2007

Starting with pictures from newspapers and the Internet, Kazuna Taguchi makes collaged portraits of fictive persons. She uses these as models for hyper-realistic paintings and finally – as the last step – makes large format photo prints of them. A media-reflexive exploration of the essence of images, the status of the original and copy and thus, not least of all, of the individual.

Born 1979 in Tokyo, lives and works in Tokyo.

STADTMUSIK, A/DE

Mauerpark, 2006

Video/Soundinstallation
4. Seoul International Media Art Biennal, 2006

Investigating patterns of acoustic sound and visual perception in urban space is the theme of the artist group Stadtmusik. In Mauerpark in Berlin passers-by move as though on a theater stage. What appears to be an excerpt of everyday life is actually digitally manipulated. Visual irritations change the view of the image section. The soundtrack consists of noises, rhythms and sounds, creating a space that sometimes contradicts the events in the image.

Founded in 2005 in Berlin by Sam Auinger, Dietmar Offenhuber, Hannes Strobl.

GUY TILLIM, South Afrika

Leopold and Mobutu, 2003–2004

Photoseries
27. São Paulo Biennal, 2006

In his photo series Leopold and Mobutu the photo journalist and artist Guy Tillim draws parallels between the colonial era under the Belgian King Leopold II, the long rule of Mobutu (1965-1997) and life today in the Democratic Republic Kongo.

Born 1962 in South Africa, lives and works in Johannesburg.

OMER FAST, Israel/DE

De Grote Boodschap (Die Große Botschaft), 2007

1-Channel-Videoinstallation, 27’07’’ Loop,
Commisioned for Contour 2007, cooproduced by OK & Contour Mechelen vzw
3. Contour Biennal Mechelen, 2007

Using individual narratives Omer Fast deals with the construction of history and finds ways to realize what is fragmentary about our memory. In De Grote Boodschap he presents scenes of four Flemish couples in immediate spatial proximity, who are caught in a time loop. In the loop the contrary stories are interlocked with one another so that “one” event and the course of development remain intangible.

Born 1972 in Jerusalem/Israel, lives since 2001 in Berlin.

GABRIEL LESTER, NL

Nightshade, 2007

Videoprojektion, 18’17’’
3. Contour Biennal Mechelen, 2007

Introduced by an overture without pictures, the film Nightshade develops an abstract tension from a sequence of exterior shots. In his media-reflexive works Gabriel Lester is interested in filmic conditioning and codes that predetermine the expectations and the understanding of what has been seen. Co-produced by OK & CAC Vilnius.
